Clinical Services
I provide private neurological consultations for adults (aged 18 and over) at Spire Bristol Hospital, and see a wide range of neurological symptoms and conditions. My aim is to reach a precise diagnosis, explain the cause of your symptoms, and support your recovery. There are many more people worrying about neurological disease than suffering from it. Whether you need reassurance, or a diagnosis, I will do my best to help you. As part of your care I may suggest diagnostic tests, including scans, referral to another specialist, or further follow-up.
Specialist areas of interest
My areas of specialist interest include:
-
Neuro-ophthalmology and optic neuritis
-
Headache and migraine
-
Facial pain and trigeminal neuralgia
-
Traumatic brain injury
-
Multiple sclerosis
-
Myasthenia gravis
-
Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
-
Parkinson's disease (diagnosis)
-
Motor neurone disease (diagnosis) - Please remember motor neurone disease is a disease of the motor (moving) neurones and so if you have numbness or tingling, or even twitchy muscles without weakness, it is exceedingly unlikely you have the condition.

What to expect at an appointment?
At your appointment, I will come to the waiting room, greet you and take you to my consultation room. During the consultation I will listen to your story, ask questions and take notes to help me understand your problems. This will be followed by an examination. The examination should not be painful or embarrassing, but if you have any concerns, such as sore areas please let me know. If you would like a chaperone, please just ask, you do not need to justify or explain why. The examination will likely involve your face, arms and legs and so it is helpful if these areas can be exposed, at least below elbows and knees. It is rare to need further exposure, but if required I will explain why and if necessary arrange a chaperone. The examination is different for each case, varying greatly depending upon your story and what ideas I wish to test after listening to you. I may examine your face, shine a light in your eyes, examine your arms and legs, tickle your feet (this is not just to annoy you, we really do get useful information from it), and watch you walk, balance and hop. Following the examination I will make some further notes and then tell you what I think about the likely diagnosis and any tests or treatment. You can then tell me what you think and ask any questions. If further tests are required I will explain the likely costs and value of the tests before arranging anything. When you leave I will dictate a letter to you and your doctor outlining my opinion and any recommendations. This will usually be with you within a week. An appointment will typically last 30 minutes of direct contact, followed by a further 10–15 minutes for me to complete your notes and dictate your letter before I see the next patient.
Do you require GP Referral?
I strongly recommend that you ask your doctor for a referral before booking to ensure that I am the correct specialist to see you.
What are your fees and which insurers do you accept?
I see both self-funding and insured patients. I am recognised by AVIVA, CIGNA, Vitality, WPA. For current consultation fees and to check whether your insurer is covered, please contact my secretary.
